Presentations
Contributing to pharmacy education
We often present our work and innovation through conferences and workshops, internationally and nationally. Our focus this past year was on the initiatives that we are leading.
Below you can find a summary and key outcomes of each presentation.
Improving Indigenous peoples’ health outcomes: developing a culturally safe workforce in Australia
Presented by our CEO Bronwyn Clark and Board Director, Faye McMillan at the 13th International Life Long Learning in Pharmacy Conference, Dublin, Ireland - virtual June 2021
In this presentation, Faye and Bronwyn gave insights into the inequities in health status between Indigenous people and non-Indigenous peoples in colonised countries. They discussed statistics and facts of the inequities in Australia for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Pharmacists are one of the most accessible health professionals and play a critical role in delivery of health services for Indigenous peoples. One of the key deliverables for the APC, as Australia’s accreditation authority for pharmacy education, is to develop a workforce that is culturally safe.
In this presentation they outlined how the development of a culturally safe pharmacy workforce can be achieved through partnership, leadership, and the embedding of cultural safety into pharmacy education programs and transforming pharmacy curriculum.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire... pivoting examinations in the pandemic
Presented by our Executive Director Professional Services Glenys Wilkinson at the 13th International Life Long Learning in Pharmacy Conference, Dublin, Ireland - virtual June 2021
In this presentation, Glenys described how we maintained public safety whilst modernising our exams during the height of COVID-19 pandemic.
She described how in March 2020 Australia and Australian states began to close their borders, and severe restrictions were placed on travel and gatherings. In response, APC was obliged to cancel all examinations, so investigated possible ways to offer examinations online to ensure the ongoing pipeline of new pharmacists onto the Australian register.
Glenys outlined how the APC team worked to pivot the Intern Written Examination into an online remotely-proctored exam for interns in October 2020. All eligible interns were given an option of sitting the exam in a test centre or online.
Glenys presented analysis of the candidate experience, and how the lessons learned allowed us to make this into a legacy change for ongoing examinations. She described how a key to the success of this response was engagement of all staff, collaboration with the Pharmacy Board and Ahpra, and excellent communication using several channels including social media.
