Workplace-based assessment for intern pharmacists

The supervised practice period or ‘intern year’ marks a significant milestone in the journey of pharmacy students. Every year more than 1,200 pharmacy students enter the internship year with the hope of a bright future as a pharmacist.

Many pharmacists contribute to this transition by taking pharmacy interns under their wings and showing them ‘real life’ pharmacy. These supervising pharmacists and preceptors volunteer their time and expertise to build a future pharmacy workforce.

We developed a set of tools to help supervisors and preceptors in the work they do to train interns and to safe proof the decisions they make around intern competency. These tools can be used in diverse pharmacy settings. They help measure and assess what interns can actually do in real-life situations. See details here on our website Intern Workplace-based Assessment. These tools are also available for degree programs who wish to use them for work-integrated learning.

We work closely with Intern Training Programs (ITPs) to integrate workplace-based assessment into the supervised practise period and to support preceptors and interns use the new tools. Read Media release | APC launches new intern assessment tools.
