Interprofessional Education (IPE) to enhance collaborative practice
As a leader in education standard setting, we are funding and leading a project on behalf of all accreditation authorities for the regulated health professions in collaboration with the Australian Medical Council (AMC).
The project seeks to contribute to an enhanced collaboration between accreditation authorities and education providers in the delivery of interprofessional education (IPE) and the development of collaborative practitioners by:
- exploring the vision of a Collaborative Practitioner from the perspective of consumers, education providers and health services, and
- developing specific and practical guidance to support education providers and accreditation authorities achieve the goal of developing graduates who are equipped to practice collaboratively. This will include exemplars and case studies applicable to a range of contexts.
19 focus groups
84 individuals
In late 2022, we convened 19 focus groups and talked to 84 individuals drawn from consumers groups, educational institutions and health service providers. We are so proud that pharmacy represented 12 (the largest focus group) academics drawn from across the pharmacy programs.
Preliminary findings of this work point to the importance of a person-centered mindset where consumers, their careers and families are the experts, not the health practitioner. Pharmacists have been providing person-centered care for decades. We have emphasised the importance of placing consumers at the centre throughout all consultations for the development of accreditation standards to support pharmacists in prescribing, medication management and residential aged care.
The profession is well placed to demonstrate Interprofessional Collaborative Practice. We are working closely with the Health Professions Accreditation Collaborative Forum to plan for how the outcomes of this project will be disseminated more broadly.
